Headline:
Tropical Cyclone Luana lies to the south of Derby. Wind and rain impacts
occurring through the Derby region.
Areas Affected:
Warning zone: Coastal areas in the south of King Sound including Derby, and
adjacent inland areas south of Derby.
Watch zone: None.
Cancelled zone: Western and northern parts of Dampier Peninsula and areas
northeast of Derby to Cockatoo Island.
Details of Tropical Cyclone Luana 16U at 2:00 am AWST:
Intensity: Category 1, sustained winds near the centre of 75 kilometres per
hour with wind gusts to 100 kilometres per hour.
Location: within 30 kilometres of 18.0 degrees South 123.6 degrees East,
estimated to be 75 kilometres south of Derby and 145 kilometres east of Broome.
Movement: southeast at 14 kilometres per hour.
Tropical Cyclone Luana, category 1, is slowly weakening as it moves inland in
the Western Kimberley. Wind and rain impacts are occurring near the system
centre through the Derby and Curtin region and southern parts of the Dampier
Peninsula to the east of Broome.
Luana is expected to weaken below tropical cyclone strength during Sunday
morning after moving further inland, however heavy rain is likely to extend
further to the south during Sunday afternoon and Monday.
Hazards:
GALES with DAMAGING WIND GUSTS to 100 km/h are occurring near the system centre
and over southern parts of King Sound. These gales may extend to adjacent
inland areas south of Derby overnight before easing later on Sunday morning.
HEAVY RAINFALL which may lead to FLASH FLOODING is likely for the northwest
Kimberley district near the system centre. This currently includes Derby and
surrounding areas and southern parts of the Dampier Peninsula east of Broome.
This area will extend to adjacent inland areas as Tropical Cyclone Luana moves
south
Tides will be higher than normal between Beagle Bay and Kuri Bay and LARGE
WAVES may produce MINOR FLOODING of low-lying coastal areas.
A separate Severe Weather Warning is current for adjacent areas in the
Kimberley.

- REMARKS:
- TROPICAL CYCLONE LUANA IS WEAKENING AS IT MOVES SOUTH OF DERBY.
- CONVECTION CONTINUES AROUND THE SYSTEM CENTRE, AND THE SYSTEM HAS MAINTAINED
- GOOD STRUCTURE AS IT CONTINUES TO MOVE SOUTH OVER LAND. THE POSITION OF LUANA
- HAS BEEN DETERMINED FROM BROOME RADAR WITH GOOD CONFIDENCE.
- LUANA CROSSED JUST NORTH OF BEAGLE BAY AT 0600 UTC, WITH GUSTS TO 57 KNOTS
- OBSERVED AT THE LOMBADINA AIRSTRIP AT 0848 UTC. SURROUNDING OBSERVATION SITES
- KOOLAN ISLAND, DERBY AIRPORT AND CURTIN AIRPORT HAVE REPORTED GALES. HEAVY
- RAINFALL IS CONTINUING WITH CURTIN AIRPORT RECORDING 130 MM IN THE 6 HOURS TO
- 1815 UTC.
- SIGNIFICANT TIDES OCCURRED IN KING SOUND DURING THE SATURDAY AFTERNOON HIGH
- TIDE, BUT NO FURTHER SIGNIFICANT IMPACTS ARE EXPECTED AS THE NEXT HIGH TIDE
- DOES NOT OCCUR UNTIL SUNDAY AFTERNOON BY WHICH TIME THE STORM SURGE WILL HAVE
- EASED.
- INTENSITY SET TO 40 KNOTS BASED ON WIND OBSERVATIONS AT DERBY.
- WEAKENING BELOW TC STRENGTH IS FORECAST DURING SUNDAY MORNING WHEN THE SYSTEM
- IS SOUTH OF DERBY. AFTER WEAKENING TO A TROPICAL LOW, THE REMNANTS OF LUANA ARE
- LIKELY TO CONTINUE TO MOVE INLAND THROUGH THE SOUTHERN KIMBERLEY AND THE NORTH
- INTERIOR, PRODUCING AREAS OF HEAVY RAINFALL.

- THE NEXT BULLETIN FOR THIS SYSTEM WILL BE ISSUED BY: 25/0130 UTC.=
